What is the cotton brush used for in a gun cleaning kid?
It's probably obvious but I'm just not sure what it's for. Also I have another question. Won't the brass brushes scrape up the black barrel of a rifle? If so, should they not be used? The brass brushes work really well on my shotguns, and I dip the square cleaning patches in barrel cleaning solution and run them through my rifles/shotguns, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the cotton brushes.
Another question: Does anyone ever "degrease" the oil in the actions of their guns, if the oil has been in there a long time? If so, how? Thanks.
The cotton brush is a swap just like running the patches through the barrel. I use mine to put a light coat of oil on after I have cleaned the barrel to coat the inside of the barrel with oil.
The brass brushes won't hurt the inside of the rifle barrel. You need to use the brush to break up the residue left behind from unburnt gun powder and any copper or lead that is loose enough for the brush to remove.
I have owned and cleaned rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers this way for over 30 years. The only thing that could damage your rifle is the rod used. You need a quality rod to clean a rifle barrel so as not to damage the crown of the barrel. Or at least a guide to keep the rod off the crown.
When I go as far to remove the grease from the actions of my rifles I am completely disassembling them. I use a good quality cleaner and rag along with a soft bristle tooth brush to scrub the parts. When assembling the parts back together I place a light coat of gun grease on the areas showing signs of wear (shiney surfaces that indicate wear).
