Outgrowing Organizing Systems – Where do I go from here? Part 1
You know, it fascinates me that no matter what hobby you decide to pursue, there are a bajillion possible gadgets for you to purchase for said interest. Whether it’s fly-fishing, model building, scrapbooking, woodworking, cooking or gardening, pick up any publication on this interest, flip to the back pages, and you’ll find a multitude of ways to spend your money making this pursuit easier, more efficient, more fun, etc.
I am certainly not I’m against any of this. As I’ve mentioned, I have many, many interests including garment sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, jewelry making, lampworking, cooking and gardening. And, I have to admit, I adore all the gadgets that go with them. J However, the problem I’ve found with all goodies, is how do you keep things organized?
It is very easy to let organization of these kinds of items quickly get out of hand. They’re frequently odd in shape or size, used in limited functions, or like many of my goodies, they come in a variety of smallish sizes. So how do you keep them sorted? Often, when you first get started in these endeavors, one container is sufficient to hold everything just fine. You can find what you need, when you need it. Which, of course, is the whole point of organization. However, as we progress in our hobbies and acquire more and more fun stuff, the one-container system just won’t work anymore.
I have to acknowledge that it usually takes me a while to realize that there’s a glitch in my system. Perhaps you’ve experienced the same thing, where one day you say, “Why the heck is this so annoying?” And then you realize that your collection has outgrown its old container and needs something new.
The first step in improving your system is to understand that as you grow and change, so will your system need to. If something that used to but fun and easy is now difficult and irritating, ask yourself what is different. Do you have more stuff? Are you working in a different space? Do you need more space? Maybe you need a specific kind of space?
Recognizing that there’s a problem is the first step in solving it.
Next time: An example and detailed helps in organizing your tools and supplies for ANY interest.
Wishing you blessings until then.
