How do I prepare a skateboard deck for acrylic paints?

I was wondering if i have to use gesso or a a wood primer on a sanded down skateboard deck. I was even thinking about using a simple spray on primer to give the board more tooth for the paint but im not sure. The brand of paint is liquitex basics. Is i possible to paint directly on the board without priming it?
If so, what primer should I use?

Your idea of using a spray on primer will work fine! As the deck is going to get stepped on...the primer not only seals the wood, giving you a secure background, but your top coat for acrylic paint will adhere properly. Any acrylic primer spray paint is fine. Lay on more than one coat. Two coats..with patience in between, allowing each coat to dry well..then you are on your way to applying what ever you choose with your acrylics. It is very important to follow your completed job with as many coats of spray or brush on acrylic varnish as you have interest in applying, (the more the better) to protect your finished work. Dry well between each coat.
