Protocol in Spiritualism
In general sense, protocol is a code of propriety, good manners and etiquettes, secured by reciprocity and common understanding and approval of the community, which regulates behavior pattern at different levels. In its wider application, protocol has spiritual, social, legal, political, cultural and diplomatic application.
In its spiritual application, it may be stated that the protocol is followed even in gods and anyone not following it is negated in the gatherings. In spiritualism, it indicates the organization, hierarchy, concept of promotion, processing through proper channel, order of precedent, autonomy, veto, tenure etc. as discussed below.
Organization: We see in the universe there is a central Government comprising of President, Council of Ministers, Ministries headed by Secretaries, then there are the Joint Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries, subordinates etc, so in gods there is an Almighty God at the top. He has three powers of creation, maintenance and annihilation of the beings administered by Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh respectively. Then they have other gods under them like Indra, Varun, Agni, Ashwanikumaras, Yamraj, Kuber, Marut, etc..followed by their subordinates. Each of these has been given limited autonomy to act in his respective sphere.
Protocol differs at different places and time: As in the central Government, there is an order of precedent followed in various functions of the Government like on Republic day etc but not followed in their family gatherings, so in the realm of gods too order of precedent is followed as per the organization indicated above. This place may differ from time to time and place to place. As once, all gods had gathered in a yagya by Prajapatis. All gods, including Brahma and Shiva had come there. When all had come, Prajapati Daksha, who was a senior Prajapati( there is a seniority list in the realm of gods too like the one in each Government office.) entered the Sabha. All those present there stood up in his honor except Brahma and Shiva. Brahma and Shiva did not stand as they were the Bhagwans and were above the Prajapatis. Daksha then paid respects to Brahma as per protocol, Brahma being his father and Bhagwan too but rather than paying any respects to Shiva who too was a Bhagwan , pronounced in the Sabha that there were some gods in the Sabha (referring to Shiva) who did not even observe the well laid tenets of discipline. Shiva, however did not give any rejoinder. This would indicate that:
1. There is an order of precedents in the gods according to which, they respected and honored the the individuals according to their position and conducted themselves in the gatherings.
2. As is even today, when a senior comes. all already present stand up in his honor, so was the system in gods too. In the Sabha, when Daksha come, since he was senior to all others, the all stood up in honor but since Brahma and Shiva were above all Prajapatis, as per order of precedent, being Bhagwans, they did not stand up in honor of Daksha, who was only a Prajapati. There was, therefore, nothing wrong as in the meeting of the Prajapaatis, there were various gods, rishis, etc. and Brahma and Shiva were above all being Bhagwans. They, therefore, had not to honor the Prajapati Daksha. But Daksha expected Shiva to stand up in his honor being his son-in-law. But the order of protocol differs at different gatherings. In that gathering , Brahma and Shiva were superior most. Therefore, they had to act as per their position. In a gathering of the Daksha family, Shiva would have honored him being his father-in-law. Daksha was, therefore wrong in having expected the same honor. in the Sabha of gods.
3. As a mark of respect, however, Shiva did not give any rejoinder as it would have created difficulty in the proceedings of the Sabha Daksha took it otherwise as further insult to him and he got enraged and passed curse on Shiva that Shiva being a mean amongst gods would not be entitled to hiss share in yagyas.
There was a system that in all yagyas and Havanas etc. there was a prescribed share for each god and what auras had been doing was denying that share. Shiva's followers also passed curse on Daksha in a tit for tat saying that one, who opposed Shiva, would be deprived of self realization and Gyan etc.
4. Proper Channel: Like in the Government hierarchy, where there is a set channel of processing the matters, in gods too one had to act according to the set channel.. In Treta Yug, when Ravana had been doing all sorts of cruelties, Prithvi could not tolerate them and so went to Indra, her immediate superior for the redress of her grievance. Since Indra could not do anything against Ravana, he too her to Brahma, his immediate superior. But since Ravana was doing all wrongs because of the boon by Brahma, he was also helpless in taking action against Ravana. He took them to Shiva, who also showed his inability as Ravan had all his heads sacrificed on Shiva. So they all went to Vishnu, who told them that he would incarnate as Rama and then finish all Rakshasas.
5. Promotion in gods, There was a system of promotion in gods too like in the universe. Daksha had been promoted as Senior Prajapati, when he held a yagya but did not invite Shiva in revenge. Sati (Shiva's queen), however insisted on attending the functions lot of ornaments, clothes etc. are given by the father to daughters, Although Sati had no need for all that, but women have weakness to have presents from fathers. Even now it persists and is called 'Stridhan' on which the in-laws have no right. But finding Shiva having been insulted there, she burnt herself in the yog-agni and destroyed the yagya and passed on curse on Daksha. Daksha then went to Brahma for the accomplishment of the yagya but since it was the action of Shiva, he showed his inability and directed them to go and pray to Shiva only, who if pleased would redress their grievance. The gods went to Shiva, who restored the yagya. Then pooja was held as per order of precedent, as indicated below:
-
Vishnu
-
Daksha, being the host.
-
Shiva
-
Brahma
-
Indra
-
Rishis
-
Sidhas
-
Lokpals
-
Yogeshwaras
-
Vedas
-
Other gods
-
Gandharwas, and so on
6. Spy system in gods: There was a proper spy system in gods as Indra could know if any one was doing tapsya etc. since he was afraid lest anyone may grab swarga from him. Narada was the greatest link between gods and human-beings,
7. Fixed Tenure: As in the high posts in Government, in gods too there was a fixed tenure of posting after which they have to come back to universe as human-beings. Even Brahma has a fixed tenure although it is a very long one.
8. Veto: In the realm of gods, all gods like Yamraj, Varun, Agni etc. have been given autonomy in their respective department and there is no interference by others in the discharge of their duties. That is why after all rakishness had been killed by Rama, Indra, who came to praise Rama, had been asked by Rama, to enliven all in his army, who had died as they had given up their lives for his sake (indirectly telling that it was for the sake of gods only). Rama could have done it himself or could have asked Brahma but since it was Indra's job, Rama asked Indra only for doing this job. Indra did as told. He threw Amrit on all of them and enlivened them. Similarly. when Ajamil had died, the persons of Yamraj came to take him but meantime he called his son Narayana but since it amounted to remembering Narayan, the God, his messengers came to take him and the messengers of Yamraj went back empty handed. Then they asked Yamraj if there was anyone above him. Yamraj told that God was above all and had a VETO power to undo all that is done

Yeah. I believe that all gods are valid, that they all exist. I'm not sure whether they're all one big god with many facets, or if there is a whole race of gods on another plane (which is what I lean towards) but either way, I believe they exist. I personally follow Anpu, because he came to me in dreams.
